Most insurances provide coverage only if your equipment is medically necessary for accomplishing mobility-related daily activities in your home. Outdoor use only is not a valid qualification.
A scooter can be more difficult to operate within the home as is requires more space for turning and is prone to tipping. However, scooters can be disassembled allowing for easier transport. Power wheelchairs are more stable, require less space to maneuver, and can be retro fit to meet future needs. They can be steered via a joystick with minimal effort.
Medicare has established 5 years as the expected lifetime of equipment. You may be eligible for new equipment before 5 years if your medical condition has drastically changed and your current equipment is no longer appropriate. Or if the extent of repairs needed to your current chair exceed the cost of new equipment.
BlueDot Medical continues to provide service and repairs for the lifetime of your equipment. Insurance typically covers the cost of these repairs.
The entire process takes 8-16 weeks. We do everything we can to get you mobile quickly. We keep you and your physician informed at each step in the process.

BlueDot Medical will be providing you with updates throughout the entire process. We offer written materials outlining the process in depth. At each transitional step in the mobility process, our rehab coordinators will be contacting you with phone updates. Additionally, your physician will also be updated at each step and will be able to track your progress.
BlueDot Medical simplifies the process for you and there is very little that you will need to do. Attending your seating evaluation with a physical or occupational therapist is one of your responsibilities- although we will handle the scheduling. The only other task that we ask of you is that you attend your face-to-face mobility evaluation with your physician as this is required by your insurance company.
It is critical that you discuss your mobility limitations as the primary purpose at your appointment. You may want to discuss any trouble walking, history of falls, loss of balance, and any limitations in Mobility Related Activities of Daily Living (MRADLs). Discussing your inability to safely use your current mobility aids such as a cane, walker, or manual wheelchair are important discussion topics. The details of this in person evaluation must be documented by your physician with copies forwarded to our office.
There are numerous factors in determining if you qualify for a power mobility device. A mobility limitation is an important component- such as balance issues, a history of falls, or difficulty walking. You likely cannot use a cane or walker safely. Usually in order to qualify, you must be lacking the upper body strength required to self propel a manual wheelchair or maneuver a scooter safely. Motivation and willingness to use the chair and the physical and mental abilities required to operate the equipment are also key elements in qualification.
Your insurance requires a face-to-face appointment with your physician to discuss the need for a mobility device as the primary purpose. A mobility device prescription is insufficient if not accompanied by the physician chart note stating a mobility discussion as the main objective. If you recently had an appointment with your physician for some other purpose and happened to leave with a prescription for a mobility device, you will need to reschedule a new visit with your doctor to discuss only mobility limitations.
The seating evaluation is a one-time visit with a physical or occupational therapist to assist in determining medical necessity for your mobility equipment. Ideally, the evaluation is most thorough if performed in a specialized seating clinic.
A complex power wheelchair is intended for patients with progressive diagnoses. They have advanced electronics and controls and provide positioning and pressure management features. Tilt and recline is an example of a feature of a complex chair.
